Because the flamingos use this area for breeding the lake and its surrounding is under the International concern for preservation. The flamingos of lake Natron feed with the lakes Spirulina algae. They build their nests using the soda flats between August and October. Dont know the best time - I was there in September. The lake is a breeding place for thousands of Rift Valley Flamingos. In Tanzania, Lake Natron is a breeding ground for lesser flamingos. Up to a million flamingos migrate to Lake Natron in Tanzania to breed each year. Some of the activities at Lake Natron are swimming, a visit to Maasai boma or a simple trek to the Ngorongoro Crater Highlands with numerous craters. Scientists predict this years flamingo breeding season could be the most significant since 2007. Among the most prominent attractions of Lake Natron is the Gelai Volcano, a 2,942 m (9,652 feet) high volcano in the southeastern part, and the archeological site of Peninj, where archeologists discovered the Peninj Mandible – the fossilized teeth of Australopithecus boisei. The current global population is approximately 2-3 million birds. What we do know is that 65 of all Lesser Flamingos on earth are born at Lake Natron, so clearly this is an important breeding area for this enigmatic species. The area around the lake offers different attractions such as a large number of volcanic implosion craters, numerous waterfalls and ravines with nesting places for Rüppell's Griffon Vultures. Everyone associates Lake Natron with Lesser Flamingos, but that is only part of the story. The surface of Lake Natron, which has high salt, magnesite and sodium carbonate concentration, is covered with a pinkish-white soda crust. The shallow and alkaline lake has different springs, the Ewaso Ng'iro River and different hot springs. Lake Natron covers an area 56 km (35 miles) long and 24 km (15 miles) wide but the water level changes due to evaporation. The lake is in the vicinity of Ol Doinyo Lengai, which is visible on the southern part. Our results will assist the future sustainable management of Lake Natron and will contribute towards Lesser Flamingo conservation.Lake Natron is situated in northern Tanzania on the border with Kenya, close to the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Analysis of lake features in the imagery, including the presence of salt islands, has been used to set lower and upper limits to lake areas suitable for flamingo breeding. Comparison to infrequent observations of flamingo breeding at Natron are consistent with the prevailing hypothesis of the importance of receding lake levels. ![]() A time series of lake surface area has been produced which shows a high degree of variability in lake levels. Lake Natron is designated as a Ramsar site and is a crucially important breeding site for the Lesser Flamingo, with nearly all of East Africas estimated 1.5 - 2.5 million of this bird (75 of the world population) having been hatched at Lake Natron. In addition, local environmental change and global climate change over the past 50 years have altered the hydrological characteristics of the catchment.Īrchival Landsat imagery (1984–2011) has been used to establish baseline data about the past hydrological variability of the lake by applying the Modified Normalised Difference Water Index (MNDWI). Both developments will significantly alter the hydrology and ecology of the lake and could impact flamingo breeding. Not only would it destroy the flamingos’ breeding ground, but it would also affect the salt marshes and freshwater wetlands bordering the lake. ![]() Lake Natron is threatened by two proposed developments: a multi-purpose dam, to be built on the Ewaso Ngiro (South) River (45% of the lake's catchment area), and a soda ash extraction factory. With three quarters of the world’s lesser flamingo population relying on Lake Natron, the end of the lake could easily spell the demise of the species. The lake is of critical importance as the sole breeding site for East Africa's population of Lesser Flamingos ( Phoeniconaias minor), a species which is classified as near-threatened due to decreasing numbers and limited suitable breeding sites (IUCN). Lake Natron Flamingos are the only animals to thrive in this environment rife with mortality. Across eastern Africa, the lesser flamingo feed on algae found in soda lakes. Landsat satellite imagery was used to investigate the ecohydrological sustainability of Tanzania's Lake Natron. Home to the Maasai and over one million flamingos, Lake Natron is a perfect. ![]() In this digital age, there are many ways in which we can store our favorite music or audio files. Prevalent, protective, and convergent IgG recognition of SARS-CoV-2 non-RBD spike epitopes. The findings also drive home the conclusion that the more we learn about SARS-CoV-2 and the immune system’s response to neutralize it, the better position we all will be in to thwart this novel coronavirus and any others that might emerge in the future. Taken together, these findings will prove useful for designing COVID-19 vaccine booster shots or future vaccines tailored to combat SARS-COV-2 variants of concern. What’s more, the S2 subunit may make an ideal target for a possible pan-coronavirus vaccine since this portion of the spike is widely conserved in SARS-CoV-2 and related coronaviruses. This finding is especially encouraging because this portion of SARS-CoV-2 does not seem as mutable as the NTD segment, suggesting that S2-directed antibodies might offer a layer of protection against a wider array of variants. variant” and the B.1.351 “South African variant.” It suggests that one reason these variants are so effective at evading our immune systems to cause breakthrough infections, or re-infections, is that they’ve mutated their way around some of the human antibodies that had been most successful in combating the original coronavirus variant.Īlso noteworthy, about 40 percent of the circulating antibodies target yet another portion of the spike called the S2 subunit. One reason these findings are particularly noteworthy is that the NTD is one part of the viral spike protein that has mutated frequently, especially in several emerging variants of concern, including the B.1.1.7 “U.K. They also prevented a lethal mouse-adapted version of the coronavirus from infecting mice. The researchers liken the spike protein to an umbrella, with the RBD at the tip of the “canopy.” While some antibodies do bind RBD at the tip, many others apparently target the protein’s canopy, known as the N-terminal domain (NTD).įurther study in cell culture showed that NTD-directed antibodies do indeed neutralize the virus. It involves production of antibodies capable of covering areas across the entire spike. This suggests a successful immune response doesn’t concentrate on the RBD. What the researchers found was a bit of a surprise: the vast majority of antibodies-about 84 percent-targeted other portions of the spike protein than the RBD. Rather than narrowing the search, Ippolito, Lavinder, and colleagues analyzed the complete repertoire of antibodies against the spike protein from four people soon after their recoveries from mild COVID-19. The new study, led by Gregory Ippolito and Jason Lavinder, The University of Texas at Austin, took a different approach. ![]() ![]() As a result, antibodies specifically targeting the RBD were an excellent place to begin the search for antibodies capable of fending off SARS-CoV-2. The RBD is the portion of the spike that attaches directly to human cells. To date, most studies of natural antibodies that block SARS-CoV-2 have zeroed in on those that target a specific portion of the spike protein known as the receptor-binding domain (RBD)-and with good reason. This picture suggests that an effective neutralizing immune response targets a wider swath of the virus’ now-infamous spike protein than previously recognized. Discovering these clues could point the way for researchers to design highly targeted treatments that could help to save the lives of folks with more severe infections.Īn NIH-funded study, published recently in the journal Science, offers the most-detailed picture yet of the array of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 found in people who’ve fully recovered from mild cases of COVID-19. But these individuals’ immune systems still hold onto enduring clues about how best to neutralize SARS-CoV-2, the coronavirus that causes COVID-19. Credit: University of Texas at Austinįor many people who’ve had COVID-19, the infections were thankfully mild and relatively brief. Francis Collins Caption: People who recovered from mild COVID-19 infections produced antibodies circulating in their blood that target three different parts of the coronavirus’s spike protein (gray). Human Antibodies Target Many Parts of Coronavirus Spike Protein Early 2022 win rates had improved, but they have finished almost exactly where they did in 2021 with 43.1%, the third-worst in the game. As a fun take on the Chaos concept who certainly can be good, I think GW deserve credit for their addition.īlack Orcs certainly seem to have found their level, and it is not good. Our first full year of the revamped Khorne team has seen them in the lower end of the list, much as their original iteration was. Skaven and Necromantic fit into a similar category here. Lizards have become the second-most played team, behind Orcs, which may be a factor here. Other notable teams to pick out include Lizardmen, who at 49.5% have continued sub-50% win rates in the BB20 world. Initial findings based on what we saw in the Eurobowl data was that this was a team that was used as a vehicle for Griff Oberwald or other strong Stars. And this is a team that has commonly been considered pretty terrible, and universally agreed to be worse than the BB16 version, so their numbers certainly bear further analysis. They have a lower sample size than almost every team on this list, but more than enough games to be considered merely an oddity. The surprise team is certainly Old World Alliance. Probably the main point of discussion now is if these teams should still be considered (as they traditionally are) as Tier 2 teams. At this point, we can stop looking at High Elves and Tomb Kings as outliers. High Elves retained their place in the highest echelons of the meta, and so did Amazons (who we’ll talk about in more detail later), Dark Elves, and Tomb Kings. I can’t think of any particular reason that should be the case, so it will be one to monitor in future. Their win rate increased in the back half of the year to very high levels. ![]() Interestingly, and perhaps surprisingly, Underworld once again topped the chart. ![]() So that seems to be a good sign of Meta health. We’ve gone from having a 62.3% win rate best team and 38% win rate worst team to 57.9% and 41.6% respectively. On a high level, our outliers from 2021 have noticeably come in. This time we’ll push forward to compare 2021 and both periods of 2022. Last time round we compared the BB16 era with 2021 and the first half of 2022. Equally we don’t always know if a tournament allowed or restricted Star Players. Unfortunately there is no way of knowing what exact tier a team was classed in at any given tournament, nor what benefit that tournament’s rules pack gave teams of any given tier. As we have noted many times, Tournaments generally do not follow the Tiering allocated in the BB20 rules. That’s a nice thing for this kind of analysis because it means our sample size is a bit more robust, but it’s also great to be covering a game in such rude competitive health.įinally, a note on Tiering and Rules Packs. Blood Bowl (and tabletop gaming in general) is back in a big way after the tough Lockdown period. Our data includes more than twice as many Tournaments as last year. One thing to note before we go anywhere else, number of games played was through the roof in 2022 compared to 2021.
